'Saala Khadoos' actress Ritika Singh reveals the ugly side of boxing
Sunday, January 24, 2016 12:00 IST
Ritika Singh, who is set to make her Bollywood debut opposite R Madhavan in the upcoming sports drama 'Saala Khadoos', talks about favouritism and dirty politics in Indian boxing
Ritika Singh is not one to pull her punches. The 22-year-old boxer, who steps into Bollywood as R Madhavan's co-star in Saala Khadoos, does not bat an eyelid when talking about the scams and scandals plaguing the Indian boxing scene. "The state of affairs right now is saddening," she sighs. But switch to her latest passion - acting - and she lights up like a 1,000-watt bulb. She confesses that the acting bug has bitten her and that she would prefer facing the camera to packing a punch in the boxing arena. Excerpts from an interview: Q. How did a boxer like you, who had no Bollywood connection and aspiration, land a film? A. I was 17 when I took part in a reality show on MMA fighters, but was eliminated after I dislocated my knee and went on to lose fights. Maddy (Madhavan) sir had seen a big poster of me posing like a boxer. So, he found out about me from the organisers and called me up to say he had a film offer. I started feeling giddy with joy. I, along with my father, then met him and accepted the offer. Q. Was it awkward facing the camera? A. Maddy sir and Raju (Rajkumar Hirani, filmmaker) sir never made me feel like an outsider. Maddy sir has become my best friend now. I taught him how to use all the emojis on Whatsapp. Shooting with him was great fun and I learnt a lot from him. He would stand behind the camera and give me cues. Q. How different is real boxing from reel boxing? A. Very. For a scene, I had to fight with street guys and I charged like a raging bull since I did not know that I had to conserve my energy for the same take from different angles, and got tired. That was the first action scene I did. I also hit Maddy sir in my enthusiasm, which I feel bad about. I even hurt myself. Q.Is this film a one-off thing or do you wish to make a career in acting? A. The acting bug has bitten me, but I don't want to do sport based movies in future. I want to play different characters. Like Maddy sir says, an actor gets to live many lives within one. Q. Will you choose films over boxing? A. If I had a film offer in hand and a boxing tournament coming up, I will definitely go for the film. I had thought of training Bollywood artistes someday, but never acting. I cannot afford to let go of any good acting opportunity. Q. What is the scope for boxing as a career in India? A. This question actually depresses me because I start thinking about the politics and exploitation that happen there. There are fighters who go to coaches and offer sexual favours to get extra attention. And then these coaches encourage only them. Good players will never get opportunities if this scenario prevails. I am a self-respecting professional and luckily, my dad is my trainer. I will be honest and say that sexual harassment happens in every industry. It just that some industries are known more for it. I am sure many people in the boxing field wouldn't like to believe that I made it to the film industry on my own. Q. Give us an example explaining how Indian boxers are discouraged. A. When boxers go for international tournaments, they are made to pay from their pockets for stay in five-star hotels. However, they (Indian agents or organisers) put them up in three-star hotels and pocket the balance amount. It is such a bad feeling to see participants from other countries get such good treatment, unlike us. We are supposed to follow a particular lifestyle, hit the gym and stay fit, but if you don't give us those amenities, how are we going to give our best? It has always been this way and I don't know what can be done to make it a better place. |

Big banner films, endorsements, awards, appreciation and attention. Deepika Padukone has all these, but she says they haven't changed the "normal girl" in her because she chooses to live a life free of complications.
"I'm just a normal girl... nothing has changed for me. I can still go out freely. I believe your life changes in a way that you want it to be. I don't think my life has changed in a drastic way," Deepika told IANS in an interview here.
"Yes, there are some things that come with the profession, but the basics are more important. I like to believe that certain things haven't changed.
"I don't miss anything about my past. I choose to keep doing things that are meaningful and special to me. I choose to live a life that is not complicated. Sometimes we unnecessarily complicate our own lives, but I choose not to live like that," she added.
Her simplicity, she said, comes from her father, celebrated badminton player Prakash Padukone.
It was in 2007 that Deepika made her foray into Bollywood, but much before that she was a successful model and had plum endorsements.
Since her Bollywood launch with "Om Shanti Om", Deepika has painted a success story that only a few outsiders from the industry have been able to score.
Tall, well-spoken and expressive, her forte has been all about her ease of slipping into characters that are distinct in persona -- whether it is nerdy Naina of "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", the bold Leela in "Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela", a doting daughter in "Piku" or valiant warrior Mastani in her last release "Bajirao Mastani".
Of course, she had her misses -- "Karthik Calling Karthik", "Lafangey Parindey", "Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey" and "Dum Maaro Dum". But now she even has a Hollywood film in her kitty -- "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage", in which she will star alongside Vin Diesel, Samuel L. Jackson and Nina Dobrev.
"I'm very excited and at the same time nervous about the film," the 30-year-old said.
After almost a decade in Bollywood, the former model, who spoke to IANS on the launch of watch brand Tissot's new collection, says she's only looking forward to "meaningful films".
"You are constantly trying to get better at what you do and you try to do better than what you did last. I want to be part of different kinds of films. That's really the aim.
"And, most importantly, to be a part of meaningful films, that will be remembered for a long time. I'm just hoping that 2016 will be as special as last year," said Deepika, who was also appreciated for her work in "Tamasha" last year.

Tu Hi Zindagi...
Har dharkan ko teri aas hai,
Har nazar ko teri talash hai.
Har taraf hai jaise, tumhari hi kami,
Tere bin zindagi kya meri, kuch bhi to nahi.
Tumse milke laga, har khushi hai tujhse,
Aaj hui hu puri, thi adhuri kabse.
Na jana kabhi raaho se mere, sanam
Tut jayenge tere bin, ji na sakenge hum...

Har nazar ko teri talash hai.

Important Lessons You Learn From A Heartbreak In Your 20s
"It's been six months! Get over him. He has moved on and so must you!" This is what casual conversations with your best friend must sound like after a heartbreak.
You must be sick and tired of listening to 'grow up! Move on!' a hundred times a day because people close to you want you to be fine. But the feeling is indeed a most helpless one. You have spent months together, knowing and adoring every little detail about each other, and then the other person conveniently replaces you, without any intimation and the connection snaps. You feel like shit but the most important thing you can do is be kind to yourself. Remember that today's pain will turn you into a stronger person. Here are ways how!
Being 'kind' to yourself is of utmost importance.
It doesn't matter if you’re a giver or taker in your relationship. You become a completely different person while dating. You change your sleeping pattern, your choice of white pasta turns to red, and his watering hole becomes your favorite too. But what happened to your favorites? In the process of being another person’s ‘right’ person, you often forget yourself. The person has left, so instead of regretting it, start valuing yourself more. Go on a long drive alone, go eat that chocolate mud pie you gave up on for the fear of gaining weight!
It's okay to take your time to heal so stop being embarrassed of yourself.
Stop going on a guilt trip every time you cry over a song that reminds you of him/her. There is no magical cure to a heartbreak. Two tubs of ice-cream, a movie marathon or a long conversation with your best friend isn't the trick to get over a heartbreak. It stays for a long period of time and you learn that it's completely fine. But once you're done crying, don't cry for the same reason twice.

HUM MEHSOOS KARTE HAIN,
TERI MOHABBAT KO APNE WAJOOD MEIN..
HUM BAYAAN KAREIN YAA NAA KAREIN,
PAR MERA CHEHRA KEH DETA HAIN..
You let me know you love me
In so many different ways.
You make me feel important
With encouragement and praise.
You're always there when I need you
To comfort and to care.
I know I'm in your thoughts;
Your love follows me everywhere.
