His name is enough. From making us laugh and cry at the silver screen, to being the first living Asian to have a wax statue at Madame Tussauds, Amitabh Bachchan is a living legend. He has been entertaining us for over four decades and has not just been part of Hindi or regional cinema, but also has featured in Hollywood films.
On his 72nd birthday, Love Limes brings to you ten favourite movies of Big B.
Anand: The actor plays a cancer specialist in the 1971 movie. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the movie also featured Rajesh Khanna. Big B took home Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award for the movie.
Zanjeer: Big B portrays Inspector Vijay Khanna in the 1973 movie. It is about an honest police officer and his fight against gang leader Teja.
Abhimaan: Amitabh plays Subir Kumar in the 1973 movie. The movie revolves around a professional singer who marries a village girl and how their marriage falls apart after his wife’s singing career begins to thrive.
Mili: In this 1975 romantic movie Big B plays Shekhar Dayal. Jaya Bachchan plays Mili in the movie who inspires a drunkard and depressed Shekhar’s life.
Deewar: This is the story of two brothers Vijay, played by Amitabh, and Ravi, essayed by Shashi Kapoor. The 1975 film was directed by Yash Chopra.
Sholay: Big B plays Jai in this cult film. The movie revolves around Jai and Veeru, played by Dharmendra, who fight against Gabbar on the request of Thakur, essayed by Sanjeev Kumar. The movie was declared the “Film of the Millenium” by BBC in 1999.
Silsila: This 1981 romantic drama was directed by Yash Chopra. It featured Big B, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Jaya Bachchan and Rekha. The movie is about Amit who marries his friend’s wife after his friend death. The movie did well at the box office and also got the cult film status.
Agneepath: The megastar plays Vijay Deenanath Chauhan in the 1990 movie. Directed by Mukul S. Anand, the movie is about Vijay who takes revenge from Kancha for his father’s death.
Black: Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the movie featured Rani Mukerji and Big B. The movie revolves around a blind and deaf girl, and her relationship with her teacher who himself later develops Alzheimer's disease. Amitabh won the National Awards in the Best Actor category in the movie.
Paa: This 2009 movie is directed by R. Balki. It featured Big B, Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan. The real life father and son, played the opposite role in the movie. It revolves around Auro, played by Amitabh, who was suffering from a rare genetic disorder called Progeria. Senior Bachchan won the National Award in the Best Actor category for the movie and even at Filmfare and Star Screen.
